Plan a first cloud deployment without losing control

Understand version control, deployment checks, access permissions and cost awareness before publishing a practice application.

The starting pointA successful deployment includes a way to verify, monitor and safely undo it.

01

Understand what you are deploying

Begin with a small practice application and draw its parts: browser interface, server, database and configuration. Identify which parts must be public and which should remain private. A diagram helps explain the difference between hosting files and operating an application.

Use a local or approved sandbox environment first. Public cloud services may charge for resources even when an application receives little traffic. Read the current provider terms and do not assume that a free-tier label guarantees a zero-cost exercise.

02

Use version control and separate configuration

Keep code in a version-controlled repository with meaningful changes and a clear run guide. Store credentials outside the repository. If a secret is exposed, deleting a line is not enough; follow the provider's rotation and incident-handling process.

Describe required configuration without publishing actual passwords or access tokens. Use the least permissions needed for the task. Avoid sharing administrator credentials or making a database public simply to make a connection work.

03

Build a small, testable delivery process

A basic delivery pipeline can check the code, build the application and prepare a deployment. Each step should fail clearly if its checks do not pass. Automation is useful only when the checks represent behaviour that matters.

Containers can package an application environment, but they do not automatically provide security, backups or reliability. Understand what is included in the image and how the application receives its configuration. Keep the first pipeline small enough to explain.

04

Verify, monitor and clean up

After deployment, check the actual page or health endpoint rather than relying only on a successful command. Review logs without exposing personal data or secrets. Define how to restore a previous version if the application stops working.

Record every practice resource and remove it through the provider's approved process when the exercise ends. Confirm billing and storage implications. Training in cloud fundamentals, administration and DevOps may overlap, but each has a different scope; confirm the curriculum and assessment before enrolling.

MAKE IT PRACTICAL

Try it yourself

  1. Draw a practice application's public and private components.
  2. Write a deployment checklist with verification and rollback steps.
  3. Create a resource and cost-review checklist before using a cloud account.
